He started his teaching career in the Dept. of Collegiate Education, Govt. of Kerala in the Dept of Commerce and worked as Lecturer, Professor and Principal in several Govt. colleges in Kerala, India. On deputation, he had a short stint as the Deputy Director of Collegiate Education, Calicut.
As an expert in accreditation of colleges, Prof. Richard Hay was instrumental in obtaining NAAC accreditation for several colleges. After retirement from Govt. service, he worked as principal of private colleges in Kerala and UAE. Altogether he has 35 years of teaching and administrative experience in the higher education sector. He is author of the book, Professionalization of Teachers and Institutions.
As part of social activities, Prof. Richard Hay was the State President of Jaycees International, Governor of Lions Clubs International, State Chairperson of Special Olympics International, Member of Rotary International Group Study Exchange Team in California, Founder Chairman of Malabar Heritage Society, President of Catholic Association, and patron of philanthropic and sports organizations.
In July 2015, Prof. Richard Hay was nominated to the Lok Sabha by the President as a Member of Parliament representing the Anglo-Indian community. Being a strong believer in the admirable leadership capabilities of the Hon. Prime Minister of the country, Shri Narendra Modi, he became a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Presently, he serves as Member of Public Accounts Committee, and Standing Committee member, External Affairs. Also, he is member of the Consultative Committee of Railways. Hay established the Campus Innovative Group, which interacts with students in schools and colleges regarding developmental issues.
